CHAPTER TWO:
The Sorting Ceremony
Soon they arrived at the Hogsmade station, Harry, Ron and Hermione all heard the familiar voice calling out, "Firs' years over here." They ran over to meet Hagrid and welcome him back, glad to see him another year. Meanwhile Ginny, Luna and Brie clambered off the train.
"I've gotta go over with the first years. I guess I have to be sorted -- whatever that means..." Brie called out as she ran over to where Hagrid was standing.
Harry, Ron and Hermione had just walked away as Brie walked up; neither of them had noticed her: a sixteen-year-old girl walking in line with the first years.
As Brie reached the great hall with the first years, she saw a tall witch in dark green robes standing before them. Brie assumed that she was Professor McGonagall. The tall witch then spoke. "In a few moments you will be joining the feast with the rest of the school, but first you have to be sorted. As you all know, there are four houses: Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, and Slytherin. Those in your house will become like family to you. You will sleep in the dormitories, eat meals, and have classes with them. Good behavior will earn you house points, while any rule breaking will lose points. Now please follow me into the Great Hall."
Professor McGonagall then led the line to the front of the Great Hall. There she set an old hat on a very small, three-legged stool. The hat then ripped open at the seam and began to sing:
I am the Sorting Hat,
Try me on and you will see.
For everyone that I have placed
Is where they ought to be.
You may belong in Gryffindor
The fearless and the brave.
Or maybe in wise ole' Ravenclaw
Knowledge is what they crave.
Maybe in loyal Hufflepuff
The allegiant and the true.
Or yet in sinister Slytherin
There's nothing they won't do.
So put me tight around your ears
In your head you'll hear me in
Listen close and you will hear me
Let the sorting now begin!
Professor McGonagall then took a long piece of parchment, and said, "When I call out your name, you are to sit on the stool and I will place the hat on your head." She gave everyone a moment to think. About thirty seconds later, she called out the first name. "Barr, Alexandra." A girl with long brown hair walked up to the stool. She sat with the hat on her head for about a minute, then it finally yelled out, "RAVENCLAW," and all of the students sitting at the Ravenclaw table were clapping avidly. Next came "Blaney, Donald," becoming the first new Slytherin. Up next was "Cone, Amanda." The hat had barely touched her head before it shouted out "GRYFFINDOR!" The Gryffindors then clapped as Amanda walked over to their table. "Dolan, Robert," became the first new Hufflepuff. Then came "Ferrill, John," who became a Slytherin, and "Gordon, Kasey," became another Gryffindor. Following her were "Hook, Kenneth," "Imhoff, Phillip," and "Kershner, Justin," who were sorted into Hufflepuff.
Brie looked around. Not too many people were left before her. "Legary," ... "Liecht" ... "Nichols" ... "Owens"... Then a tall blonde: "Porter, Julia," became a Slytherin. Then Professor McGonagall called out, "Razza, Vincent."
They had skipped her! Professor McGonagall then called out the last few names, "Tursky" ... "Whyte" ... and "Zittle, Whitney" became a Ravenclaw. She then rolled up her scroll and went to sit down at the teacher's table. How could have they forgotten her?
Brie had no idea to what she was going to do. She was standing there, in the middle of the room, looking up at Professor Dumbledore. He then stood up. "This year we have a transfer student from Beauxbatons. I would wish that you all will welcome her and treat her like any other student here. Brianna Potter, will you please come up to be sorted?"
As Professor Dumbledore walked over to the hat, Brie heard many whispers, "Did he say Potter?" "Potter ... could she be related to Harry?" Brie, in fact, had never thought of being related to Harry Potter. Potter was a very common last name, and besides, Harry never had a sister. Everyone knew that.
Brie saw Hermione, a girl she had met while she was still living in France. She was whispering to a tall, dark haired boy. "See Harry, that's the girl I was talking about on the train."
Brianna then sat down on the stool as Professor Dumbledore placed the sorting hat on her head. She heard a voice inside her head and she was sure that it was the hat talking to her. "Potter, eh? So there's another one of you... Well, let's see. I could put you just about anywhere... you're brave like a Gryffindor, smart like a Ravenclaw, loyal to your friends like a Hufflepuff, and yes, you're as cunning as any Slytherin has ever been. But now that I look deeper into your head, I think that you would do the best in Slytherin."
Brie thought back. "No, I think that you are wrong. I am not evil-minded as you so kindly put it in your song."
"Not Slytherin, eh? Well then, I guess it will have to be GRYFFINDOR"
Brie then ran down to sit with Hermione and Ginny at the Gryffindor table. There she saw someone that looked like he could be Ginny's brother, and then there was Harry, who reminded Brie of someone. Actually, he reminded her of herself.
About 20 minutes later, professor McGonagall walked over to the Gryffindor table. "Harry, Brianna, when the prefects are instructed to lead their houses to the dormitories, you both are to go to Professor Dumbledore's office. The password is the same as it was at the end of last year."
Soon enough, everyone had finished eating. Dumbledore stood up and announced, "Prefects will you please lead your houses to their dormitories"
"Come on Ron, that means us," noted Hermione.
"Gryffindor, over here, please follow us," called Ron. "First years to the front of the line, please."
"Brie, this way. We need to see what Professor Dumbledore wants, remember? Well, I can think of what he might need to speak to you about -- your schedule, and maybe why you are here. But then again, you said that he would tell you after you settled in. Me? I can't think of what he'd want to tell me. I would have thought that he would have told me everything I needed to know at the end of last year..." Harry's voice trailed off as they rounded a corner. Ahead of him, he saw the magnificent staircase up to Professor Dumbledore's office. "Brie, we're here."
"Good, now how do we get up there?"
"The password, of course," he replied. "Fizzing Whizbee." And with that, the staircase started moving.
Brie and Harry stood on the spiraling staircase waiting to get to the top. When they got there they both knocked on Professor Dumbledore's door.
