CHAPTER NINE
Lessah moved in to the attic a few months later, after what could be described as a small war with her mother. Remus went to America with her to help her pack her things. Unpleasantness apparently ran in the family. Remus did his best to avoid conflict with Lessah's mother, though there were some issues which he could not help disagreeing with her on. Remus was quite happy to leave America and return home again, though he admitted that he would miss the company of Lessah's older brother. Saber had been a great help in packing Lessah's things, using illegal spells to make all of it fit into just two trunks. He had also given them a small package with the instructions to throw out Remus' bed and use what was in the package, making sure to get rid of the bed first. The package, when opened, produced a huge, double king-sized bed. Remus and Lessah were very impressed with it.
A year later, Remus and Lessah were still living together. Their plans to get married had been put on hold by the rising fear in the world around them. The very name of Voldemort was enough to instill terror in people. Remus and Lessah were themselves afraid to go out into the world, as it was a well known fact that werewolves were untrustworthy and dangerous. There had been a rash or werewolf killings that gave cause for their fears. They spent their full moons cringing in fear inside the chicken coop, which was soon lacking chickens. Remus felt bad about killing the chickens, which they did more for wolfish entertainment than for food.
In July, amid all the fear and chaos in the world around them, James and Lily brought a son into the world. They named him Harry James Potter. Sirius, who had been named the boys godfather, arrived early on the morning after Harry's birth to tell Remus and Lessah. He fond them on the roof, watching to sun rise.
"I'm a godfather!" Sirius announced. "James and Lily had a boy, his name is Harry."
"That's wonderful," Remus said. "How's Lily doing?"
"She's great. Tired, but great. James says that you have to come see the baby in a few days."
"What does he look like?" Lessah asked.
"Cute beyond words," Sirius said plainly. "That's how James said to describe him, even though I think it sounds really lame. He looks like James, but he had Lily's eyes. And he was born with a mess of black hair. Ha, I'm a godfather."
Sirius apologized for distracting from the romance of watching a sunrise and then apparated away. Remus and Lessah went a few days later to see James and Lily and the new baby. James looked quite frazzled when they arrived, panicking if baby Harry so much as squawked. For that reason, Lily would let everyone but James hold the baby. If James was hurt by that, he didn't let it show. He chose to make sure that everybody held the baby properly instead of being offended. Sirius seemed more excited about the baby than James was, thoroughly amused at the thought of being the baby's godfather. He made a point of reminding everybody about that every five minutes, until Lily and Lessah both threatened to hex all his hair off if he didn't stop. The threat was quite effective and Sirius took to sulking in a corner.
"Right then, I think it's time to go now," Remus said as the baby spat up on him for the second time. "Cute kid James. Really, just charming."
Remus and Lessah left the Potter house, though they were not gone for long. After the passing of the full moon, Lessah returned several times to help Lily around the house and steal a chance to hold the baby. Remus went with her, having nothing else to do with his time, but refused to hold the baby in fear of being spit on again. In total, his robes were soiled ten times before Harry was a month old.
"Babies are so wonderful," Lessah said, brushing the soot off her robes. "We should have a baby."
Remus frowned and shook his head. The laws of the wizarding world prevented werewolves from having children. If a child of werewolf parents was born a werewolf, it was considered to be a threat to society. If the child wasn't a werewolf, it was endangered by the parents. Either way, the child would be taken from the parents, who would be then sent to Azkaban. Remus hated that law. He hated many of the laws which were concerned with werewolves. Sadly though, there was nothing he could do about the laws. The world was stacked against werewolves. A few groups existed in the wizard community, aimed at bettering the lives of "people who suffered from the curse of the wolf", but their efforts were in vain.
What is it with women and babies? Remus thought to himself as he lay on the roof, watching the stars. Below him, in the attic, Lessah was sleeping. One woman has a baby. The next thing you know, they all want one. Then what? Are their husbands obligated to give them one? Lessah and I aren't even married yet. Why should we be thinking about this now?
In the days that followed, it became apparent to Remus that Lessah had heard his every thought, that night while he lay on the roof. She was giving him the silent treatment. Remus tried to talk to about it, explain his point, but she wouldn't listen to him. Remus was just thankful that his mother had gone to stay with friends and didn't have to listen to the tremendous argument that took place a day prior to the full moon. The day had started off badly, Remus had awoken to find himself on the downstairs sofa. It was also September, which Sirius deemed to be "The Awkward Month". It was called such because Remus and his friends all found themselves in a rut during the first September that they didn't have to head back to Hogwarts. Being September wasn't the problem that started the argument, but it probably helped a little.
"I can't be around you for one more full moon!" Lessah spat. "I'm leaving!"
"There's the door! Get out!" Remus shouted, pointing his wand at the door and almost blowing it off it's hinges. "Don't come back until you're ready to be reasonable."
Lessah grabbed her bag and wand and headed out the door. She turned back to say something, but Remus slammed the door shut. They made a brief exchange of furious thoughts and then Lessah was gone. Her presence did not completely leave Remus. It faded, but the fiery wrath that was directed at him seemed to burn stronger. Remus took his frustrations out on several pieces of the furniture before he exhausted his strength.
Remus spent the night of the full moon alone, wandering deeper into the forest than he had ever done in his life. Part way through the night he met up with the local wolf pack, who informed him that they didn't want him wandering into their territory. They were quite aware that he was a wold and a man and didn't trust the latter side of him. Remus was escorted to the border of their territory by two large males, though it seemed to Remus that they were smaller than he was. The walk back took several hours and it was nearly dawn when the two wolves left him. It began to rain a little before sunrise.
