CHAPTER ONE

Remus and Lessah met at the train station a few days later. Lessah had with her, along with her trunk, a very large cage which was covered with a black cloth. She also had a long ebony rod with am ivory sphere set in the top. Occasionally an odd sort of chirping was issued from the cage. Lessah was very tight lipped about the contents of the cage and would only say that whatever it was that was in the cage did not like being in the cage.

The ride to Hogwarts seemed longer than usual. Sirius held everyone in the compartment with the griping tail of how he had lost his motorcycle over the summer. The short version that he was being irresponsible and a large logging truck had run it over. Remus wasn't surprised by this; Sirius' parents had checked with Remus' mother to see if Sirius was there, but it had been the night of a full moon.

Remus noticed the changes that had taken place in his friends over the summer. Sirius was still an athletically built rebel with long black hair and a mischievous grin, but he now had some facial hair. James looked as if he had been working out over the summer, which was not actually out of the ordinary. Peter looked as if he had lost a considerable amount of weight over the summer, but when Remus asked him about it he said quietly that he was under a lot of stress. Even Remus himself had changed. He looked healthier than he usually did so close to the full moon, his sandy brown hair was almost shoulder length and, like Sirius, he had also grown some facial hair. The only people who seemed to have remained the same were Lily and Lessah, though Lessah was showing signs of illness caused by the full moon.

Remus and Lessah sat out the trip to the school in relative silence. The full moon had passed only three days ago and they were both feeling tired from it. They were starting to doze when the compartment door slid open. Severus Snape was standing in the doorway, his normally greasy black hair was gold and scarlet. The coloring of his hair was so bright that it almost seemed to glow. Sirius and James burst into hysterical laughter at the sight of him. Remus and Lessah smiled at each other and tried to hold in the laughter. Peter cowered and Lily gave Sirius and James stern looks.

"Potter!" Severus exclaimed. "What have you done to my hair!"

James and Sirius were both too hysterical to answer. As hard as they tried to suppress it, Remus and Lessah had to join in the laughter.

"Find something funny, Lupin?" Snape snarled, Remus could feel the hate in his voice. "Think this is funny? I happen to know that you had silver and green hair last year."

"Severus! Take a moment to appreciate the humor of this," Lessah said, almost sarcastically. "Last year Remus was done up like a Slytherin, and this year you get to be Gryffindor. If you can't appreciate a harmless joke, screw off."

"How you ever became Head Boy is beyond comprehension, Potter." Snape said, ignoring Lessah. "You'll pay for this!"

Severus left, sliding the door shut as hard as possible. A very brief silence fell over the compartment. It was broken by the sound of amused laughter. Lily tried to scold James and Sirius for what they had done, but soon found herself overcome by the sound of laughter.

"I wonder how he'll deal with it?" Remus said, wiping the tears of laughter from his eyes.

"I doubt he'll be creative enough to make a turban from his scarf," Sirius scoffed.

Word of Snape's new hair had circulated through almost the entire student body by the time they reached the school. Sirius and James received several comments, slaps on the back and handshakes when they entered the Great Hall. They seemed to be enjoying the praise and the scowls that Snape shot at them through out the night. He had not done anything to cover his hair.

At the end of the sorting, Professor Dumbledore stood up to address the students.

"As we head into another year, there are a few things that you all need to be reminded of," he said in his patient tone. The whole hall fell silent. "First of all, we ask you all to use caution and judgment whenever you are not on school grounds. While there is no need for alarm, or to cancel the trips to Hogsmead, you are reminded that Hogwarts is the safest place to be. When you go into Hogsmead do not travel alone, go in groups of two or more. The forest is also off limits to all students, but I am sure that you all know that by now.

"And one more reminder to our more mature students and then we can eat," Dumbledore said, and Remus got the feeling that he was looking directly at him and Sirius. "At Hogwarts, we expect to see clean and shaven faces."

Remus and Sirius looked at each other and sighed. Remus rubbed the facial hair on his chin with one hand and piled food on his plate with the other.

"I just knew that he was going to say that," Sirius said, shaking his head. "I could see him looking at us. Why didn't I just shave before we got here."

"And I was just getting used to having scruff on my face..." Remus started.

"We could always wax it off," Lessah said, with an almost sadistic smile.

"No thank-you," Remus and Sirius said firmly together.

After dinner, students began to make their way to their house dormitories. Remus, Sirius, Peter and Lessah hung back and waited for the Great Hall to empty out more. Remus had to explain to Lessah that they knew a shortcut back to Gryffindor Tower. Sirius insisted that Lessah be blindfolded so that she wouldn't learn their secrets. Reluctantly, Remus and Lessah agreed. By the time they agreed on everything, found the shortcut passage and reached Gryffindor Tower, the common room was empty.

"You know something," Sirius said happily, "I forgot that it takes longer to get here if you take that passage. Isn't that something?"

"You're unbelievable sometimes," Remus said, removing Lessah's blindfold.

Sirius said something unintelligible and headed up to the dormitory. Remus and Lessah hung about in the common room for a few minutes, and then headed up to their respective dormitories. Sirius was waiting for Remus in the stairwell.

"So, you and Lessah... did you guys, uh, you know? I mean, how was your summer?" Sirius asked.

"I'm pretty tired Sirius. Where is this conversation going?"

"I just want to know."

"Know what?" Remus whined, rolling his eyes.

"Did you two... do it?"

"Is that your immature way of asking if Lessah and I had sex?"

Sirius nodded, his eyes were wide with disgusting excitement.

"Lessah and I have decided not to take our relationship to that level yet."

"And that's your boring way of saying 'no' then, is it?"

"That's right."

Remus left Sirius in the stairwell and entered the dormitory. He was very tired, the trip to Hogwarts had been longer than usual. Remus crawled into his bed and fell asleep. Several times during the night though, Remus was awakened by stray dream or thought from Lessah. Biting Lessah and making her a werewolf has brought him and Lessah together in more ways that one. It was going to be a long year, again.
