The Magical Awakening

-PROLOGUE-

Excerpt From Artemis Fowl's Diary. Disk 1. Encrypted.

In light of recent events I Artemis Fowl the second have decided to keep a diary. In fact I am quite surprised that the idea has never occurred to me before. An intellect such as mine should be documented for the reference of future generations of Fowls.

Of course, I must be careful with such a document. If it were to fall into the wrong hands it could be quite disastrous for the family of Fowl.

My father, Artemis Fowl the first has recently disappeared and my family's considerable assets have taken a sharp downturn as a result. Therefore I must regrettably step up to fill the void left by his absence.

August 1^st 1995,

Yesterday, I and Butler (My Body Guard) met a contact in the North of Iceland just outside the city of Akureyri in relation to my search for the book of the Fairies. With this book in my possession I hope to bulster the Fowl assets to what they once were. Alas the contact turned out to be a would-be mugger who bit off more than he could chew. (In the form of Butler)

There is one event of this trip stands out vividly in my mind. We met our contact in a restaurant in a small town called Jeikaldor, the mugger pulled a gun with which he aimed at me and made some outrageous demand for money. Butler being the highly trained professional that he is managed to quickly and with minimum fuss dis-arm the bandit or so he told me because I was not witness to this sequence of events as I was sitting in the library across from the restaurant.

This came as quite a surprise to both Butler and myself as we both have no idea of how I had managed to virtually disappear from where I was sitting in the restaurant and reappeared in the library.

This is not the first time something like this has occurred to me. Just last year when I was 10 years old, by just thinking about how interesting it would be for one of Juliet's (Butler's younger sister) Wrestling figure's to come to life and dance an Irish jig a bright blue spark was emitted from the palm of my hand. The spark hit the Wrestling figure, which then scrambled quickly to its feet and began to dance.

There is something mysterious about these events; this is something I will need to look into sometime in the future.

August 5^th 1995,

Today something completely unexpected occurred. I received a letter from the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry's Headmaster Albus Dumbledore. Below I have included the contents of this letter.

Headmaster: Albus Dumbledore

(Order of Merlin, First Class, Grand Sorc., Chf. Warlock, Supreme Mugwump, International Confed. Of Wizards)

Dear Mr Fowl,

We are pleased to inform you that you have a place at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Please find enclosed a list of all necessary books and equipment.

Term begins on 1 September. As you are born to a non-magical family expect a personal visit from Deputy Headmistress Minerva McGonagall on August the 10^th to discuss your options.

Included with this letter was an extremely bizarre list including books, uniform and other forms of equipment including a cauldron. The letter was delivered by an owl. I assume that this is some hoax of some kind though I can not begin to fathom why.

August 10 1995,

Deputy Headmistress, Minerva McGonagall did indeed arrive at Fowl Manor early this morning. In what turned out to be a most interesting and informative meeting Professor McGonagall (she requested that I address her as such) assured me that there was really a magical world out there. She managed to convince me with some rather impressive stunts (spells) such as transfiguring her fine self into a cat (this was quite impressive) and also transforming inanimate objects into animals.

All in all I think that this is an opportunity to good to miss. I agreed to attend this school of magic's and Professor McGonagall assigned to me a sheet of paper with instructions to obtaining all of the items on the list and where to go to catch a train called the Hogwarts Express to the school.

Initially she was quite concerned about my parental status, mother isn't herself (she's going crazy) and my father is missing but I managed to convince her that I was perfectly able to care for myself with the help of Butler and his younger sister being quite adequate.

After she left I made arrangements with Butler to acquire the items on my school list tomorrow.
