To Family

Part 1- The Potters

Harry Potter stood at the kitchen window of the Potter's house. A small smile appeared on his lips as he watched his three children playing Quidditch in the yard.

James was playing Seeker like his father, and grandfather, before him. He played on the Gryffindor team during the school year. As James hovered in midair the wind ruffled his ever-messy black hair. His eyes were green. He was the spitting image of his father, minus the scar and the glasses.

Lily was the youngest. The vivacious 9 year old loved to play Chaser, she would be as good as her mother someday. Although she may have inherited her mother's Quidditch skills, she was a reincarnation of her grandmother and namesake.

Sirius was the only one of the three to inherit his mother's chocolate brown eyes. There was no doubt that Sirius would be as handsome and charming as the first Sirius. There was also no doubt he would be as much trouble. His shaggy hair was an amazing color that could only be called reddish-black. It whipped around his face as he carefully guarded the makeshift Quidditch hoops in the Potter's small backyard.

Harry still stood at the window watching, an hour later when Ginny placed her small hand on his shoulder. He looked down at her and smiled. They were standing there with their arms around each other when the children came into the house cold and windblown, carrying their brooms.

The three stood quietly looking at their parents until Lily shed her cloak and boots and went over to worm her way between her parents. They smiled down at her and Harry ruffled her coppery red hair.

James and Sirius came over and joined the family hug. Harry put an arm around James' shoulders and James placed a hand on Lily's head. Sirius leaned his chin on his mother's shoulder and grabbed Lily's free hand. They stood there for long minutes. Just being together. Thinking.

Harry thought of how glad he was to finally have a family all in one piece.

Ginny remembered days spent at the Burrow, just being a family.

James wondered if he would ever be this happy when he was grown up.

Sirius was thankful for people who cared about him.

Lily wanted to know what was for dinner.

They were a family.

Ginny went to start dinner. James challenged Sirius to a game of Exploding Snap. Lily went to her room to play with her dolls. Harry remained at the window, wishing he'd known his parents.

The doorbell rang. Sirius ran to open it. He pulled it open and a pack of Granger-Weasley children burst in. Edward and Emma herded Lucy and Lavender inside, Thomas and Arthur ran of with Sirius and James. Molly dashed down the hall to find Lily, clutching an armful of her own dolls. And Ron and Hermione entered, Hermione with little Remus on her hip and Ron carrying a big cake and a large bottle of butterbeer, their contribution to dinner.

The two families sat down to dinner at the big table. Harry, seated at one end raised his glass and made a toast, "To family." His words rang out in the silence.

Just then Emma's napkin turned into a large newt, and she leapt at Sirius and Arthur, who were giggling uncontrollably.

The moment was gone, but the love remained. They were a family. Nothing could change that.
