EPILOGUE
In the year that followed Lessah's death, Remus learned the true value of Sirius' loyalties. Sirius had begun to act very strangely, disappearing for long amounts of time, only to be very cryptic when he returned. Remus knew what was happening. Sirius had become a spy for Voldemort. James, who still took time to give Remus news of the war, told Remus that his suspicions were ludicrous, but Remus knew they weren't. If Sirius wasn't a spy he wouldn't have been acting so strangely when Remus was about. Sirius might have been able to fool James, but Remus wasn't going to be fooled so easily.
The anniversary of Lessah's death past and to Remus' amazement, he survived it. He had thought about taking his life that night, as he wandered through the empty forest behind his house, but something happened in the forest that made him change his mind. He had been approached by two Death Eaters, servants of Voldemort. The were dressed in black hooded robes which hid their faces. They spoke calmly and Remus couldn't sense any hostile intentions. They did however, have intentions of convincing Remus to join them in the war.
"You had best save your breath and shove off," Remus growled, reaching for his wand. "I won't deal with the likes of you."
"The Dark Lord can help you, werewolf," said one.
Remus froze. There were only six people who knew he was a werewolf, and one of them had died a year ago.
"Yes, we know you're a werewolf," said the other. "We have been told by two very reliable sources."
"Your master has nothing that I want. I won't warn you again, get off my property."
"Oh, but he has many things that you could want," said the first, circling around behind Remus. "Cures for your... condition. Yes, I see that you want that. He has them, indeed. He learned many things in the distant lands."
Remus found himself beginning to think about that the Death Eaters were telling him. A cure for his curse was something he had wanted all his life.
"But that wouldn't be enough for you, would it?" asked the second. "Perhaps if the One, say, raised someone from the dead? Someone close to you, whose love you deeply desire?"
That was it. Remus made up his mind.
"How dare you!" Remus roared, raising his wand. "Get off my property or you will meet your Dark Lord in pieces!"
The threat was enough. Even Death Eaters weren't stupid enough to engage in a duel with an outraged werewolf. The vanished, promising that next time they would not be so reasonable. Remus ran back to the house. He had passed the test, he had to tell James and Sirius.
Sirius probably already knows. He was probably there tonight. Remus thought.
James and Lily went into hiding a few weeks later. Their Secret Keeper could only have been Sirius, he and James were like brothers. Remus wished that James had listened to him, but he insisted that Sirius was not a spy. Sirius disappeared. Then, not even a week after going into hiding, James and Lily were killed. Through some miracle, their son Harry survived and Voldemort was defeated. The whole wizarding world was in an uproar. There was a search for Sirius Black, who had been the Potters Secret Keeps. Remus was right he had betrayed James. Remus tried to find Sirius before anyone else did, but he was too late. In an alley, in the middle of the day, someone else found Sirius and confronted him. Thirteen people died that day, twelve Muggles and an inept wizard named Peter Pettigrew. Sirius was taken to Azkaban without trial, he was guilty.
Remus was the last of this group of friends. He took to traveling the world, learning about ways to combat the dark arts. He never let anyone get so close to him as his friends had been. He didn't want to keep anymore secrets. Hogwarts' three illegal animagus were gone and only the werewolf remained. Remus kept their secrets for a long time to come.
