- Author's Note:
- The last of the nastyness in this chapter. After this, nothing so nasty. (apologies to those who want more nastyness or want more details, you'll just have to suffer like Sirius). And that whole scene in the Quidditch Stands was inspired by the bleachers behind Nanaimo District Secondary School (for any Nanaimo-dwellers) and the many rumors about them
CHAPTER THREE
The end of the year crept up on Remus and his friends. Everyone was nervous about the year end exams. For some students, it was their last chance to do well before they left Hogwarts and joined the rest of the wizarding world. Remus had taken to locking himself in random closets so that he could study without being distracted by the usual business of pulling pranks on people. Remus found that this actually didn't work very well because he and Lessah still shared thoughts.
On the night of the new moon, Remus and Lessah were both finding it had to sit still at the table, and Remus was finding it harder to keep his hands off of her. The enchanted ceiling showed a moonless, starlit sky. A shooting star streaked across the sky more than once.
"Aren't the stars pretty tonight?" Lessah asked Remus as they got up from the long table and headed out of the Great Hall.
"Are they? I hadn't noticed, I've been watching you all night."
It sounded to Remus like something Sirius would have said, but it worked. Lessah blushed noticeably and put her hand over her face. Remus smiled and put his arm around her shoulder.
"How would you like to go for a romantic walk under the moonless sky?" Remus asked, heading in the opposite direction of Gryffindor Tower.
"Well, we really should go to the dormitories, but I don't think that would be much fun. Where are we going to walk to?"
"I'm not sure. I just don't really want to go up to the dormitory... Where are you going?"
"To the door."
"Haven't I taught you anything? Doors are for people like your cousin, whose name I shall not mention because it still makes me sick to think of him as being related to you."
Remus took Lessah by the hand and led her away from the entrance to the castle. On a wall near a flight of stairs, was an old painting of some nameless wizard who had long been forgotten by history. Remus shifted the portrait to one side and pushed on one of the blocks on the wall behind it. A few feet over, a doorway opened up. Remus took Lessah through the door and lead her down a long, narrow, dark passage. The passage sloped downward on somewhat of a steep angle and Remus wished that there was a hand rail on the wall. As they approached the end of the passage, part of the wall slid to the side and cool, fresh air from the outside rushed into the passage.
Outside the castle, the only sounds were the rustling of the leaves, the occasion owl flying by, and Hagrid singing loudly in his hut. The sky was devoid of clouds and littered with an uncountable number of stars. Even without light from the moon, the stars lit the sky enough to see well. It was a cool night, but not cold. Certainly though, it was cooler than usual for the month of May. Remus and Lessah walked away from the castle, being careful to be extra quite around Hagrid's hut. They weren't supposed to be outside after dark. As safe as Hogwarts was, there were things in the nearby forest that were unsafe for students. Lessah pointed this out to Remus.
"The things in there already know that we're more dangerous than they are," Remus said casually. "If we look at them right, they'll leave us alone."
Remus and Lessah walked to the Quidditch Pitch and climbed into the stands. From there they could see almost all of the grounds. Remus put his arms around Lessah as they sat in the cool air. Lessah took her wand out of her robes and traced patterns in sky, joining the stars together. Remus took his own wand out and started drawing lines through Lessah's patterns. Lessah growled and tried to snatch Remus' wand from him. Remus dodged and cast a tickling charm on Lessah, all in good fun though. Lessah soon fell off the bench she was laughing so hard. Remus, wondering if he might have overdone it - and slightly worried that someone would hear the laughter - leaned down to see if she was alright. That was a mistake. Lessah grabbed Remus by the collar, pulling him off the bench as well.
"Undo the spell!" Lessah gasped. "I give up!"
"I don't know a counter-spell," Remus said, smiling evilly.
Lessah grabbed Remus by the ear and pinched it hard, which suddenly made him remember the counter-spell, which he cast in a hurry.
"What do you know, I learned the spell," Remus said, rubbing his ear. "Did you have to pinch so hard?"
"Would you like me to kiss it better?"
Remus nodded slightly as Lessah sat up and kissed him on the ear. It felt to Remus as if his ear had burst into flames. He rubbed his ear again, just to make sure that it wasn't on fire, and looked at Lessah. There was a slightly carnal thought drifting though Remus' mind. Judging by the look on Lessah's face, Remus guessed that she had probably picked up on his thought.
Kiss me.
Remus obeyed Lessah's response thought. At that point, instinct and hormones took over the situation. One thing quite effectively led to another and soon, Remus wouldn't have cared if even Severus Snape, Lessah's cousin and Remus' mortal enemy, had wandered upon the scene. He didn't, which was fortunate because it would have been very awkward if he had.
The light of dawn, just before the sun rose over the horizon, found Remus and Lessah re-dressing in the Quidditch stands. Remus had to hunt around for his neck-tie, Lessah had thrown it out onto the Quidditch Pitch. It was still too dark to see anything though and Remus had to abandon his tie. He and Lessah headed back to the castle. They agreed that nothing had happened, but that nothing should happen again soon.
