Chapter One: Taken Away.
It all began on July 9th 1995, it was a hot Sunday morning and students were euforic because summer vacations had just started. There were lots of teenagers and kids on the parks and on the streets, there was happiness in the air. No one imagined that across the ocean, in Great Britain's wizarding world, a war was being conceived. And even if this war really started it wouldn't affect people in Mexico, for this was a peaceful country in every way.
Still, there was a girl who didn't seem to care about the brand new freedom she got after finishing junior high. Sitting upon a carpet on her bedroom floor, Marina quietly read an enormous Mathematics book. At least she pretended to be reading, though hundreds of thoughts ran through her head. She had finished junior high with honors, she had won a scholarship for one of the most important high schools in the country and she had a perfect family, but something was missing. She felt a hole in her heart, as if there was something waiting for her, calling her from very far, beyond the sea.
Her parents were at church and she was supposed to be taking care of her little sister, Luna, and her friend Yvett, who had come to stay for one month during vacations. Instead Marina was now lying on the floor, trying to decipher the meaning behind a terrible dream she had almost every night since June 24th. Whenever she closed her eyes she could see it again: two boys dressed in black robes, holding a big golden cup in the middle of the night inside a cemetery. In front of them a small man with a rat-like look in his face murmuring under his breath, pointing a wooden wand at them. A jet of green light, one of the boys falling backwards, and out of nowhere, a horrible laugh that made Marina wake up all sweaty and scared.
The doorbell rang and pulled her back to reality. Marina could hear her parents talking outside with Luna and Yvett, who were playing in the yard. But their voices weren't sweet and gentle as always, instead, they were talking in a hurry, and they seemed particularly worried about something. Marina ran downstairs, in her hands a bunch of keys and looking for the one that would open the front door. She almost flew through the yard, rushing for her parents' call, and when she got there and let them in, they pushed her inside and locked everything so that the residence would seem empty. Everyone was afraid now, especially Marina's mother, who was as pale as snow and about to cry. The father, also pale, was giving instructions to his children in a low and trembling voice.
"Girls! Pay attention to what I'm going to say. You Marina, take Luna and Yvett to the attic and make them stay there 'till I go and bring them back," he started. "After that take some food, a couple of candles and a matchbox from the kitchen and lock yourself in the basement. No matter what you hear stay there. Do you understand? Stay there!"
"Yes father, I will" answered Marina nodding her head.
She could remember somebody saying similar words years a go. Like if history was repeating itslef all over again. Those kind of memories made her nightamres.
Marina was afraid, she had never seen her father so worried. Her heart bumped faster and faster as she ran into the kitchen after leaving the girls inside the attic. Her mother was standing next to the fridge, drinking tea from a plastic cup. Her face was still pale and she was shivering like a child.
"What's going on, Mom?" asked the girl.
"Oh Marina, there's something you must know. There's something I should have told you before..." answered her mother, but she was interrupted by her husband, who came in abruptly holding a baseball bat in his hands.
"Marina, what the hell are you doing up here? They are at the door, go and hide as I told you!" he shouted.
"Who is at the door? Why do I have to hide? C'mon, let me know!" replied the girl.
"You will know later! Go and lock yourself into the basement! Now!!"
Marina obeyed instantly. As soon as she was in there, she sat next to the door trying to catch up some of what was going on upstairs. She closed her eyes to remember the exact details of her nightmares. Many sounds came from the living room, Marina could hear her Daddy's steps and her Mom's whispers. But then, she heard a new sound. The banging of the front door and a man's voice very different from her father's.
"I hope she's ready, 'cause she's coming with us now," the stranger said.
"No, she is not!" cried Marina's mother.
"Oh, don't be silly, of course she is! It's for her own good and you know it." a woman interrupted in a calm voice, "You can't keep her away from her world all of her life!"
"That's not her world! When she came here she became our daughter! She grew up here! Her world is this! We are her family! Not you! She belongs here!" shouted Mom, her eyes shining with tears.
"She is in danger here! If she stays with you, he will come and hurt that girl you love so much!!" the man said in a loud voice.
"Marvin, calm down! You won't get anything from a Muggle talking like that!" told him the woman.
"She's right! You won't get anything from us!! She is staying here!" yelled Dad.
"Don't you understand? He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named is growing up his power again! He is still looking for her! He will find her! You...she needs protection! She needs to be in a safe place! At Hogwarts, or at least with some member of the Order!" spoke Marvin.
Back in the basement, Marina tried to organize the information. Who were they talking about? He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named? Which safe place? Muggle? What's a muggle? She pushed herself closer to the door, paying more attention to the voices on the other side of it. She could listen them deciding somebody's future, they would take somebody away. It could be Luna, or even herself...The shouting continued.
"You are not taking her!" said Dad.
"She's coming, it's not an option! And if you agree or not, we don't care!" said Marvin.
"Damn, Marvin! Stop it!" shouted the woman.
"But Claudii, what else can I do?"
"Well, maybe hold them while I bring the girl. And don't stare at me like that, I hate it when you get that damn I'd-prefer-fighting-them-up look in your eyes. You're a wizard, use that wand to keep them here!"
"All right, just don't take too long."
"I won't. One more thing..." she pointed her wand at the couple, "Silencio!" Mom and Dad continued complaining, but this time no sound came from their mouths.
"Claudii, you'll have to look in every room."
"I know exactly where she is."
And she walked straight to the basement's door holding her wand. On the other side of the door, Marina held her breath as she heard steps getting closer. Suddenly, they stopped. The door was locked, whoever it was wouldn't be able to open it. Marina prayed nobody could enter in her refuge. It was locked. They wouldn't. They couldn't. Please.
"Alohomora," whispered a voice coming from the other side, instantly the door was open. A tall woman was standing there. She had waist-length brown hair held in a ponytail and she wore thin silver glasses. She was looking at the girl with joy, with the kind of look in the eyes of a kid when she receives her first doll and is able to play with it. Marina still sat on the floor, hugging her knees and pressing herself to the wall.
"Come here darling. I won't hurt you," spoke Claudii. "Go get some of your things, we don't have much time."
"Who are you? What's going on?" asked Marina.
"You'll know later darling. We must leave. Say goodbye to your sister and your parents."
"Will I ever see them again?"
"If everything goes right, you will. But if not...well, you better go say goodbye."
"But why do I have to? They are my family!"
"I guess this isn't the best moment to tell you , but you need to know, that'll help you understand things a bit better. You are a witch. You are an English witch who was supposed to be studying at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry since age eleven."
"A witch? England? Hogwarts?" Marina was now standing up, facing the stranger and feeling a tight knot in the middle of her throat. "I don't understand. Who are you?"
"We don't have anytime for questions right now. Pack your clothes and go say goodbye to your parents. I'll explain you later. Now go!"
Without another word, Marina walked through the open door and directly to her bedroom, where she began keeping her most beloved possessions inside a couple of back packs. She looked around, she had lived there all her life, she could remember every single detail that had changed in her bedroom through the years. She had had so many good moments in there with her best friend, singing, playing and having fun. How was she acting so calm with this? She felt very impressed by all the news, but at the same time she felt relieved. There wasn't time for thinking, she needed to be quick. She finished packing and walked out of her bedroom giving a last glance to the vase full of flowers that stood over her writing desk next to the window. A tear rolling to the tip of her nose. Turning away from the room she ran up to the attic and knocked the door twice.
"Can we come out know?" asked Luna in a tiny voice coming from the inside.
"No baby, not yet," answered Marina sweetly, "Listen to me, I'm going on a trip, I'll be away for some time, I don't know when I'm coming back."
"Will it be soon?"
"I am not sure, I just came to say goodbye. Please take care of Mom and Dad. I love you honey."
"I love you too, you're the best sister I've ever had."
"And you are the best sister I will ever have. Take care of yourselves. That's for you too Yvett."
"Ok, don't worry, we'll take care," replied another tiny voice, Yvett's.
"Goodbye little Luna, don't you ever forget me!"
"I won't, I promise!"
Marina knocked again and ran back to the living room. There she saw Claudii staring at some family portraits placed over the mantelpiece , standing next to her was a tall guy dressed in jeans and a plain t-shirt. He was still pointing his wand at Marina's parents, they were in such a state of pity; Mom was sobbing uncontrollably and Father was moving his lips as if he was shouting, swinging the miniature of a baseball bat in front of him.
"Ready now?" asked Claudii, clapping her hands once and smiling widely at Marina.
"Yes." she answered, motionless.
"So this is she," interrupted the man named Marvin. "I finally get to meet my mate's favorite conversation subject. Wow!"
"C'mon Marvin, don't say nonsense. Let's get going, we've got a plane to catch," said Claudii violently. "Now, you girl, give me that bag. Give your parents a goodbye kiss and hug them, it'll be long 'till you see them again."
"Hey! Why the sudden rudeness? You were acting so nice and kind," spat out Marvin in an insolent tone. "Is it that you aren't glad with the results of your little investigation? Are you afraid she'll prefer staying rather than coming?"
"Shut up."
Marina placed one of her back packs on Claudii's hands and automatically walked toward her mother's arms. She hugged her tight and gave her a kiss on the cheek. Then the girl turned to her father and hugged him equally tight, and this time it was he who kissed her in the cheek.
"I love you both. Please take care. Don't you dare forget me," Marina whispered in their ears.
"Let's just go, please, girl, quickly!" Claudii was wiping a tear from the tip of her nose, "My God, she sounds exactly the same..." her voice weakened. She took Marina by her right arm and pulled her apart from her parents. "Don't be that sad, we are going to have fun, believe me. We've got a long trip expecting us, and we've got to explain you many things about the wizarding world. That will be fun."
"Ok" answered the girl, "I just hope it is as I have always imagined, full of color and fantastic stuff."
"Oh, it is!" smiled Marvin, taking both bags from the women's arms, "You are going to love it. Lets get on the road."
