Harry staggered into the Gryffindor common room one morning after Quidditch Practice, and noticed a new notice on the bulletin board. Harry read the notice. He scowled, and stared at the notice. A school play. He could not believe it! Why on Earth would Hogwarts put on a school play? He read the notice again, just to be sure.
Hogwarts' First Annual School Play!
This year we will be doing Lord of the Rings
Auditions will be held the week of October 1st
Come be a part of the classic!
"Ron!" he called.
"Yeah?"
"Did you read the notice?"
"No. What's it. . . what? What's Lord of the Rings?"
"I don't know," Harry replied. "Hermione might."
"Let's ask her," Ron suggested.
"All right." Leaving it at that, they walked down to the great hall for breakfast. Hermione was already there.
"Hermione," Ron asked, sitting down, "What's Lord of the Rings?"
"Why do you ask?"
"Just wondering."
"Lord of the Rings is one of the greatest pieces of Muggle literature. Mind you, Tolkien DID get a few points wrong, but..."
"Wait a minute," Harry interrupted, "I think I've heard of it. Oh, yeah. Mrs. Figg gave it to Dudley for his birthday last year. He hasn't touched it."
"I wish I'd brought my copy. I hear they're thinking about doing a school play of it," Hermione said, oblivious to Harry's comments.
"They're not just thinking about it. They're actually going to do it!" Ron exclaimed.
"I wonder..." Hermione began, but at that moment, Dumbledore stood up to talk.
"As many of you my already know, this year, we will be putting on a school play. It is being hosted by our seventh year Muggle Studies class, and will be directed by our new Muggle studies Teacher, Professor Johnson. Professor Snape has graciously volunteered to help." Harry looked at Snape. He looked like the last thing in the world he wanted to do was direct a play. Harry looked at Ron. Ron rolled his eyes.
Dumbledore was still speaking. "Next week, all afternoon classes will be cancelled so that auditions can be held. Tomorrow, there will be a meeting for all who are interested in auditioning. Have a good day." And with that, he sat down.
"I was actually kind of considering auditioning, but I'm not so sure if Snape's going to be involved," Harry began.
"Snape's not that bad. I'm sure not going to miss out on an opportunity like this if I can help it," Hermione said.
"So, you're planning to go into acting?" Ron asked
"Ron- this is the best piece of Muggle literature I've ever read! To be a character would be amazing! I hope I'm Arwen!"
"Who's Arwen?" Ron and Harry asked, simultaneously.
"The most beautiful elf ever. And Elrond's daughter. Elrond is a wonder!"
"Ok, ok. We'll all try out," Harry said.
"This is going to be so much fun!" Hermione exclaimed.
"Yeah, sure, whatever," Ron mumbled, as they left the table, and made their way back to the Gryffindor tower before classes began that morning.
