Nobody Said Life Was Fair

Astariel

Story Summary:
An angsty Hermione thinks through difficulties with an imperfect boyfriend who is much like any other typical boy. Sigh. It really isn’t fair that boys are known to mature much slower than women, trust me, it can be quite a disappointment to us.

In a way, she was being unfair.

It really was unfair of her to expect him to get everything, to understand instantly what was going on with her.

But she had waited so long, and she had been ready, but now, now it was way too late.

He hadn't been able to grow up and deal with her, and now she no longer cared for him in that sense.

Then why was she going out with him again?

Why were they together again, the 'cutest couple.' More like a cutest ½ couple, seeing as how only one person felt something in the relationship.

She had thought she loved him, and it turned out he had loved her, but, then he didn't...wasn't ready...didn't know what to do with a girlriend. He wasn't ready.

How it had driven her insane! Insane to the point where she hid her real reason for breaking up with him under a smaller one, to avoid hurting him, and then hating herself for lying to him, her best friend.

Why hadn't he been ready when she was?

If only he had been ready when she had been, then there would have been something going on.

That's why it was unfair of her to be so angry with him over this when half of it was her fault in the first place! She had never told him about this.

She never let it slip that she wanted something more in their relationship.

She had dropped subtle little hints, even though she knew he wouldn't pick up on them. He didn't. So she sighed and let it go, and waited.

Stupid, unseeing prat.

He hadn't realized her needs in time, so she had given up waiting and dumped him, but now they were going back out again, and he seemed to have gotten his priorities in order, and they matched her former ones.

Now she didn't know what she wanted anymore.

Hermione couldn't stay mad at him over this for too long.

She loved him like a brother, if not more.

Ron might be a stupid, unseeing prat.

But he was her stupid, unseeing prat.

He was her stupid, unseeing, prat-of-a-boyfriend.

Ron sighed and buried his head in his hands. He had really blown it this time. Blown it wide open and sky high.

It was true he hadn't picked up on Hermione's hints, but eventually Harry and Ginny got sick of watching and intervened.

They told him she wanted him to kiss her.

Really kiss her.

Ron groaned. He had really screwed up. Somewhere inside of him he had known what she wanted, and ignored it.

He was a stupid, unseeing prat.

Maybe he could win her back before it was too late.

He doubted it.

He loved Hermione like a sister, if not more.

It was really better for her to be with someone else, someone who would treat her like she wanted to be treated.

But not someone too bad. Ron would have to consider.

First he thought of Harry. His and Hermione's best friend.

No, not Harry. It'd be too awkward for Harry to date Hermione after Ron broke up with her.

And he was already going out with Ginny, to the secret delight of the Weasley boys.

Seamus? No. Too Irish. Dean Thomas? No. Too tall. Taller than him. One of his brothers? No, too many brothers to go through.

Neville? It was known that he had had a crush on Hermione since second year. No. Neville was nice and all, but Hermione needed someone to take care of her, not the other way around.

Ron nearly choked as he considered his next choice.

Draco Malfoy? Well, yes he was in Slytherin, but, as much as Ron hated to admit it, Malfoy seemed...changed. He had saved Harry, Ron and Hermione's lives during the last battle in sixth year, and he had been fighting on the good side...

Ron gritted his teeth.

No. A Malfoy was a Malfoy, and Malfoys do not belong with Hermione Granger. Any of them, and that includes Narcissa.

Suddenly, he laughed. Here he was, a seventh year pretending to be studying for his NEWTs, planning out the rest of Hermione's life.

All he wanted was for her to be happy.

Even if it meant he shouldn't be with her.

With that feeling in mind, he set off to look for her, his resolution set.

Author notes: This is the beginning of my series of puzzling one-shot stories, that are all somehow connected. Look for similarities in writing style, word and character usage, and other clues I've left behind. Each story of mine is under a different psuedonym, so look hard. At each of the author notes on the stories, I shall leave a discussion topic thingy, about issues in life, general stuff to talk about, or the stories themselves, etc. See if you can find them all in order!
